Energy futures represent contracts to either buy or sell one of the fossil fuels or products related to them at a predetermined future date and price. Futures contracts are used by investors to reduce their exposure to price fluctuations of the underlying assets. The majority of energy futures are traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), which is part of the CME Group that specializes in energy commodities.
